The Japanese Cultural Center of Hawai‘i’s Summer Cultural Workshop series is back for 2019. Once again, we will be offering a variety of cultural classes and activities for a limited time for adults and children from July – August 2019. These sessions will be open to the public with Cultural Center members receiving discounted rates.

Taiko 101 | Saturday, July 20, 2019 | 9 a.m. – 11:00 a.m. | Member: $25; Non-Member: $35 (SOLD OUT)

Participants for the Taiko 101 workshop will learn some of the history of taiko in Hawai‘i and Japan, common words or phrases used and basic hitting techniques. Group will also learn a simple taiko pattern. Workshop will be led by the Taiko Center of the Pacific.

Japanese Department Store Gift Wrapping | Saturday, July 27, 2019 | 9 a.m. – 11 a.m. | Member: $20; Non-Member: $25

Ever been to Japan and been amazed at how the department stores wrap your purchase so neatly? Ever wondered how they do that? Participants attending this workshop will learn how to wrap gifts the Japanese department store way. This hands on workshop will be led by Ms. Emi Murayama.

Eisa 101 | Saturday, August 17, 2019 | 10 a.m. – 12 p.m. | Member: $20; Non-Member: $25

Planning to attend the Okinawa Festival this year? Ever wondered what eisa is? This workshop will cover what eisa is, some history of eisa in Hawai‘i and participants will learn several eisa dance numbers. Workshop will be led by Ms. Linda Asato.

Learn the popular Japanese handicraft art of enameling from award-winning enamel and cloisonné artist, Kazuko Inomata Sensei. Participants may sign up for one or multiple sessions to design and make their own one-of-a-kind enamel pieces of various colors on a base of metal or ceramic object. Materials will be provided.

  • Individual members receive discount on one reservation per workshop.
  • Family members receive discount on two reservations per workshop.
  • JCCH will confirm your reservation within two weeks of receiving your payment.
  • Cancellation prior to 72 hours notice will be reimbursed in full.
