The Japanese Cultural Center of Hawai‘i’s Summer Cultural Workshop series is back with a variety of cultural classes and activities for adults and children from June – September 2018.
Cultural Center individual members receive a discount on one reservation per workshop. Family members receive discounts on two reservations per workshop. Cancellations prior to 72 hours in advance of the workshop will be reimbursed in full.

Participants in this workshop will learn the history and cultural importance of Japanese swords in Japan and Hawai‘i, how to care for your sword and the do’s and don’ts of handling swords. Workshop will be led by the Japanese Sword Society of Hawai‘i.
Taiko 101 | June 30, 2018 (Sat) | 9 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. | Member: $25 / Non-Member: $30 | 5th Floor ‘Ohana Room
Participants for the Taiko 101 workshop will learn some of the history of taiko in Hawai‘i and Japan, common words or phrases used and basic hitting techniques. Group will also learn a simple taiko pattern. This program is produced by the UH Manoa Outreach College’s Statewide Cultural Extensions Program.
Fun Deco Sushi | July 21, 2018 (Sat) | 10 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. | Member: $25 / Non-Member: $30 | 5th Floor ‘Ohana Room
Participants in this workshop will learn how to make the perfect rice and to prepare ingredients to create fun deco sushi with Sushi Chef Todd. Participants should bring a small container to take home their sushi.

Unleash your creative side - everyone can be a creative artist! Participants attending this workshop will make two different greeting cards with a Japanese theme. These hand-made cards are perfect for special occasions. Open to ages 16+ and participants must bring their own scissors.

Learn the popular Japanese handicraft art of enameling from award-winning enamel and cloisonné artist, Kazuko Inomata Sensei. Participants may sign up for one or multiple sessions to design and make their own one-of-a-kind enamel pieces of various colors on a base of metal or ceramic object. Materials will be provided. $5/piece materials fee.
