The close-knit JCCH staff have varied interests, but they do share one commonality: their combined efforts to see the Japanese Cultural Center of Hawai‘i continue to grow and mature as an institution that preserves and educates about the Japanese American experience in Hawai‘i.
Japanese Cultural Center of Hawai'i Programs and Gift Shop Assistant
Primary Duties and Responsibilities: Reporting to the Program Director, the Program and Gift Shop Assistant will assist with community outreach events, JCCH special events, cultural festivals and the JCCH Gift Shop. This position includes staffing the Gift Shop, organizing Gift Shop events, community outreach to festivals, and may require travel off-site in the community and neighbor islands to represent JCCH.
Other Duties: Staff Gift Shop and supervise Gift Shop volunteers, organize special events to bring the public to JCCH—events include the Summer Craft & Collectibles Fair, Things Japanese Sale, cultural festivals, book and author events, and other events upon the approval of the Director of Programs and/or the President and Executive Director.
Work Hours: 19 hours per week. Preferably 6 to 8 hours per day over 3 days.
Equipment Use: Computer, fax machine, multi-line telephone, copier.
Mental and Physical Demands: Able to manage and prioritize multiple tasks with attention to accuracy and detail. Accept direction and supervision. Possess good judgment and strong customer service skills. Able to carry up to 25 pounds. Comfortable with working large events and standing for longer periods of time.
Communication Demands: Must communicate well, both verbally and in writing; basic written communication skills for writing letters, internal office correspondence, and statistical summaries. Must have professional and pleasant telephone etiquette. Team player who is able to work well with JCCH staff, volunteers, Board of Directors, Board of Governors, donors, members and the general community.
Minimum Qualification Requirements: Experience in non-profit organizations, event management, retail, customer service, and working with a cash register. Computer skills with competency in Word, Excel, Outlook, internet research and social media. Able to type 35 wpm.
Additional Qualifications: Experience with Point Of Sale software and inventory management
Managing online sales
Valid driver’s license with access to a vehicle
Education/Experience: High school diploma required; college degree preferred.
Familiarity with Japanese culture, traditions, and language preferred, but not required.
